Trump: ‘I’ll move anything to Alabama,’ but FBI, DOJ should be close together

Former President Donald Trump appeared to be lukewarm to the idea championed by Republican lawmakers to move FBI headquarters to Alabama, saying he prefers the facility to be near the Department of Justice building in Washington.

“I think the FBI should be somewhat close to DOJ — if they’re all honest people,” Trump told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo during an appearance Sunday on “Sunday Morning Futures.”

When Bartiromo attempted to clarify that Trump doesn’t agree with the GOP suggestion to move the headquarters to Alabama, Trump said: “I’d move anything to Alabama, because I love Alabama. If Alabama wants it, I’m all for it. No, I love Alabama. But I think there’s something to be said of the FBI and the Department of Justice … they work together. They could walk across the street. So every time you need somebody in court or whatever you’re doing, they have to ride 1 ½ or 2 hours in traffic from a place in Virginia that’s very far away?”

Trump was referring to the FBI’s plan to relocate its headquarters to a D.C. suburb, either in Virginia or Maryland.

Some congressional Republicans, including Sen. Tommy Tuberville and House Judiciary Chairman and Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government Chairman Jim Jordan, are pushing for FBI headquarters to move its main building to its Huntsville facility.

But Trump said his plans while in office were to have the FBI move into a new building in Washington.

The FBI currently works out of the 50-year-old J. Edgar Hoover Building, with more than 5,000 employees, located across the street from the Justice Department’s headquarters.

“I like the idea of it being close to the Justice Department because they work together. That’s what I preferred, that’s what I was going to do,” Trump said. “But I like the FBI being somewhat close to the Department of Justice. And I will tell you, the FBI people felt that was good, also.”

The FBI headquarters-to-Alabama proposal would seemingly stand little chance of succeeding legislatively with Democrats in control of the Senate and the White House.
